Nine Must Do Off-Piste Descents

‘Go beyond the bounds of the ordinary by hiring a guide and trying one of these amazing backcountry routes’ Writes Matt Dickenson a Chamonix based guide.

Number eight in his nine choices and just before the Vallee Blanche (number nine) is Sainte Foy (Ste Foy).

He writes ‘Ste Foy is the newest resort in the Tarentaise region of France, and retains a local, authentic feel. The best thing about the off piste here is that the quiet nature of Ste Foy means that you can always find fesh tracks long after the bigger resorts in the valley, such as Val D’Isere, are tracked out. There are many possibilities but the best journeys venture into wild backcountry to the north of the domain.

Both the north face of the Foglietta and Col Granier routes end up at the same place – the village of Le Crot, uninhabited in winter and finally La Masure.

The north face of the Foglietta offers a challenging day out with a steep entry point. Col Granier is a lower alternative, which avoids the walk up the Foglietta.

Start: Top of the Aguille chair, followed by an hours climb to the summit of the Foglietta (2930m). Col Granier is accessed from the top of the Marquise chair.

Finish: La Masure (1350m) from where you can catch the free ski bus back to Ste Foy station.

Vertical aspect: 1700m north and west facing.

Technical difficulty: Short but steep entry on to the Foglietta (40 degrees). Col Granier is more moderate. The tracks finish are narrow.

Season and conditions: Possible throughout the season, however good coverage and stable conditions are necessary’

Number two in Matts article was another local slope:

The east face of the Aiguille Rouge Les Arcs. The access to Les Arcs is via Villaroger which is five minutes away from Chalet One. The Aiguille is technically difficult and a guide is mandatory.

Blue skies all round

After the unprecedented start to this season the sun has returned, the last two weeks have been blue skies all round with great ski ing to be had regardless of your choice of ski station.

Ste foy snow has been holding up especially well along with Les Arcs and La Rosiere. Various expeditions to Tignes and Val D Isere over the last ten days have shown the snow to have been stripped by the big storm some fortnight ago. Winds of 150kph blew for a couple of nights. Mind you if you know where to look powder can be still found with new snow forecast for the end of this week.

From the start of the season (weather allowing) it has been possible to ski back to the chalet off piste from Ste Foy.

Here is a view of Chalet One from the car park showing the sheer amount of snow that we have had so far.

With the forecast tomorrow for 24cm+ we have had more snow than the whole of last season already!

It was actually impossible to see out of the ground floor window in room four due to the snow depth.
